Monash Motorsport takes advantage of optimization and additive manufacturing technologies and wins again!
Since their first Australian SAE Student Racing competition in 2000, the Monash Motorsport team has steadily improved the performance of their race car. Recently the students discovered the benefits of combining Altair‘s OptiStruct optimization technology and 3D printing. Based on an initial prototype rear hub design from the 2013 car, the team proceeded to pursue titanium front hubs and uprights to decrease the car’s unsprung mass. This was a tough challenge, since the former design was already made of lightweight aluminum. To tackle this, Monash Motorsport employed Altair’s optimization technology OptiStruct to design and optimize a titanium upright, which was then produced using additive manufacturing technology from CSIRO. As a result, the students were able to reduce the component’s weight by a further 30 percent whilst maintaining the component stiffness and reducing the development time and costs.

Weight reduction is a decisive factor in the space industry, since the lighter a satellite is, the less it costs to send it into space. Since 2013, RUAG Space has been conducting intensive research and development work to investigate how to ‘print’ its components using an Additive Manufacturing (AM) process. DECKED
The huge capacity of a pickup comes at the expense of storage. The loading area is often a simple box with no ability to store smaller items safely or secure them from theft. After spotting an opportunity in the marketplace, entrepreneur, Lance Meller, started work on a well-built alternative. Lance founded DECKED with his business partner, Jake Peters, with a shared determination to create an innovative, robust and useful storage solution for both commercial users and private owners alike. The system had to be able to withstand a load of 2,000 lbs, fit it into a wide range of pickup models including those from Ford, GM, Chrysler, Toyota and Nissan and be manufactured for a compelling retail target price. DECKED selected Altair ProductDesign as it needed a partner that was able to deliver conceptual design work along with advanced engineering and prototyping services.

Impact surrogates are used to provide a representation of a living human which can then be impacted under injurious loading conditions such as a ball impacting the thigh to understand the response behaviour.

Optimizing Cooling Passages in Turbine Blades
Turbine blades have internal passages that provide cooling during operation in a high
temperature engine. The design of the cooling passages is critical to achieve near uniform
temperature of the blade during operation. The temperature of the blade is dependent on the thermal properties of the blade material as well as the fluid dynamics of the air circulating in the cooling passages. Computational optimization methods have successfully been applied to design lighter and more efficient structures for many aerospace structures. An extension of these techniques is now applied to guiding the thermal design of a turbine blade by designing the optimal cooling passage layout. Optimization methods will be applied to determine the optimum pattern of the cooling passages and then to optimize the size of the individual cooling passages. The goal is to produce a more thermally efficient turbine blade design that will produce blades with longer lives and better performance.

Rolo Bikes approached Altair ProductDesign due to its familiarity with the HyperWorks suite and expertise in the application of CAE techniques to optimize carbon fiber structures. The objective of the program was to optimize a new bike frame to achieve world leading performance for weight, stiffness and comfort. In addition, the team was also tasked with developing an efficient and cost effective virtual testing process to analyze the performance of future bike frames from Rolo and other partner companies.

Computational Analysis of Quadriceps Tendon Force Following Total Knee Replacement Surgery Leads to Improved Patient Knee Flexure
Anterior knee pain is a significant complication following total knee arthroplasty (TKA) surgery. The inability to freely extend/flex the knee has a crucial influence on patients daily activities including walking, lifting and rising from a chair. This knee movement inability is one of the most common indications of needed TKA procedure revisions. Poor sizing during surgery of the patellar knee component – a “button-like” element that increases the mechanical advantage of the
extension force. The research biomechanics group in the Department of Bioengineering at Clemson University has evaluated the effect of the patella-button thickness on the variation of the magnitude of the quadriceps tendon force by applying HyperWorks-based finite element analysis.
